Aviva Investors, the asset management arm of UK insurer Aviva, launched a tokenized share class of its £22 billion ($29.4 billion) Sterling Liquidity Fund on the XRP Ledger with Ripple on Monday, October 26. Aviva invested £50 million ($66.7 million) in the new share class. The launch does not move the entire fund onto the blockchain; it gives investors an onchain representation of shares in the existing fund.
The investment brings Aviva’s total holdings across its two tokenized money market fund offerings to more than £86 million ($114.8 million). The other product is a tokenized U.S. dollar liquidity fund share class that Aviva launched on the XRP Ledger on July 29 with approval from the Central Bank of Ireland.
How Aviva’s Digital Twin Fund Structure Works
The Sterling Liquidity Fund dates back to 2002 and is an Ireland-domiciled UCITS money market fund. It invests in high-grade, sterling-denominated short-term debt instruments and provides daily liquidity. Under Aviva’s “digital twin” model, investors’ holdings are represented onchain while the fund itself continues to operate offchain.
Investors need an eligible digital wallet to access the tokenized share class. BNY Mellon holds the fund’s assets, while digital asset custodian Komainu and digital infrastructure platform Licuido supported the launch. Aviva said the tokenized shares retain the conventional fund’s investment objective, risk profile, liquidity characteristics and regulatory protections.
Aviva Builds on Earlier XRP Ledger Fund Launch
Aviva first partnered with Ripple in February with plans to bring some of its traditional investment funds onto the XRP Ledger. Ripple said at the time that Aviva was its first European investment management partner. The sterling launch extends that partnership after the earlier dollar-denominated fund share class.
“We believe tokenized funds can increase efficiency and ultimately lead to improved client outcomes,” Aviva Investors CEO Mark Versey said. Aviva also plans to examine further tokenization opportunities with Ripple.
