Deutsche Bank plans to launch a digital-asset custody service for corporate and institutional clients in Europe before the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approval, with an expected October 2026 licensing milestone under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, according to Deutsche Bank spokesperson Heinrich Frömsdorf.

The bank announced the planned service on September 16, 2026. Deutsche Bank intends to begin serving its first clients after completing the applicable regulatory process, making the offering an announced but not yet operational custody product.

Deutsche Bank plans to support five specifically identified digital assets at launch: BitcoinEther, Circle’s USDCEURC and AllUnity EUR, or EURAU. The bank also plans to add custody for tokenized financial instruments at a later stage and said the range of supported assets could expand depending on client demand and its product-approval, risk-management and regulatory processes.

Deutsche Bank will manage clients’ digital-asset wallets and private keys as part of the service. That structure will allow customers to hold digital assets and transfer them to third parties without having to build and maintain their own institutional custody infrastructure.

The initial customer base is expected to include corporates, asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokers and sovereign institutions served through Deutsche Bank’s Corporate Bank and Investment Bank divisions.

Gerald Podobnik, Co-Head of Corporate Bank at Deutsche Bank, said digital assets are “not a replacement for the traditional financial system” but a complement to existing market infrastructure.

Deutsche Bank outlines custody security architecture

Deutsche Bank said the custody platform will use hardware-based key protection, multi-person approval processes, separate warm- and cold-storage environments, and backup and recovery controls. Selected external technology and infrastructure providers will also manage defined technical components of the system.

The custody initiative has been under development for years. Deutsche Bank, founded in 1870, disclosed plans in 2023 to develop crypto custody through a partnership with Taurus after applying for a digital-asset custody license in Germany.

September 2023 reporting also identified Taurus as Deutsche Bank’s partner for cryptocurrency custody services aimed at institutional clients. Later reporting about the planned 2026 launch identified Bitpanda and Taurus as participants in the project.

Deutsche Bank’s broader digital-asset work has also included stablecoins. Sabih Behzad, Deutsche Bank’s head of digital assets, said in June 2025 that the bank was considering entering the stablecoin market, including potentially issuing its own token.

The planned custody service will therefore begin with Bitcoin, Ether and selected stablecoins while maintaining a separate roadmap for tokenized financial instruments and possible additions to the supported asset range.

MiCA shapes rollout as German banks expand crypto services

MiCA reached full enforcement on July 1, 2026, forming the regulatory backdrop for Deutsche Bank’s planned European custody launch.

Deutsche Bank is listed by the Financial Stability Board as a Global Systemically Important Bank and has been developing its crypto custody business as other large German financial institutions also move into regulated digital-asset services.

Landesbank Baden-Württemberg began offering crypto custody services in April 2024 after partnering with Austria-based Bitpanda for its institutional custody platform.

DZ Bank said in December 2025 that it had received authorization from German regulator BaFin under MiCA to operate its meinKrypto platform.

Deutsche Bank’s expected licensing milestone would place its planned service alongside those regulated German banking initiatives, while its own offering is designed for a broad institutional customer base and combines bank-managed private keys with external technology infrastructure.
