Glamsterdam Test Puts Larger Blocks and Validator Coordination Under Scrutiny

TL;DR

  • Ethereum’s Glamsterdam test on Sepolia targets 200 million gas per block, more than triple the previous target.
  • Prysm released a client update shortly before activation to replace its older default with the intended setting.
  • The test will examine block propagation, validator performance, application behavior and the resource demands of higher Layer 1 capacity.

Ethereum is set to activate the Glamsterdam upgrade on Sepolia on October 6 with a 200 million gas target at 13:53:36 UTC, after Prysm released v7.2.1 to align its validator client with the planned test configuration. The change removed a manual setup step that could otherwise have left some Prysm validators proposing smaller blocks during the public test.

Gas measures computational work on Ethereum and limits how much processing can fit inside a block. Sepolia previously operated with a 60 million gas target, while Prysm v7.2.0 could support Glamsterdam but retained that older default unless an operator changed it manually. Increasing the target gives Sepolia room to process more than three times as much work per block, but that does not translate into a fixed threefold increase in transactions because different transactions consume different amounts of gas.

Prysm Fix Removes a Configuration Mismatch

Prysm is one of Ethereum’s major consensus clients. Without the update, validators using its older default could have proposed smaller blocks while other participants followed the higher Glamsterdam target, producing inconsistent test conditions. Validators can still override their proposer settings, but the new configuration makes the intended target the default when the relevant part of the fork begins. The update was described as a configuration fix rather than a consensus failure.

The larger-block experiment is intended to test more than raw Layer 1 capacity. Raising the block gas limit also increases the computation, bandwidth and state growth validators must handle. Sepolia gives developers a public environment for observing whether blocks propagate quickly enough, validators keep pace and hardware demands remain manageable before a similar production setting is considered. The test does not mean Ethereum mainnet will automatically adopt the same gas limit.

Glamsterdam Tests Changes Across the Ethereum Stack

Glamsterdam also includes technical changes beyond the gas-limit increase. Enshrined proposer-builder separation changes how blocks are assembled and delivered to validators, while block-level access lists help clients identify which parts of Ethereum’s state a block will need. The upgrade also adjusts gas charges for selected state-creation and state-access operations to better reflect their longer-term burden on nodes.

Developers will be watching whether different validator and client implementations continue agreeing on the same chain as blocks become heavier. Block builders must deliver data quickly enough for validators to propose and attest reliably, while wallets and applications need to maintain accurate gas estimates and correctly handle contracts built around fixed gas assumptions. Client disagreements, slow propagation or inaccurate estimates would give developers specific issues to address.

Ethereum has not scheduled Glamsterdam for Hoodi or mainnet. Sepolia instead gives node operators, developers and application teams a shared environment to test the new rules using tokens with no market value. The key evidence will come from network behavior after activation, including whether the heavier workload remains reliable across clients, validators and applications that would ultimately need to support it.
