Ethereum Foundation Launches zkAPI for Private AI Payments

Zero-Knowledge System Lets Users Pay for API Access Without Revealing Identity

TL;DR

  • The Ethereum Foundation and Open Anonymity Project launched zkAPI, a private payment system now live on the Ethereum mainnet.
  • Users deposit tokens into a vault, prove a funded balance with zero-knowledge cryptography and receive a temporary API key with a spending cap.
  • AI chat and agents are the first use cases, with blockchain queries, image and video generation, VPN bandwidth and AI-agent payments also listed.

The Ethereum Foundation and Open Anonymity Project launched zkAPI on October 2, 2026, bringing a privacy-focused payment system to the Ethereum mainnet that lets users pay for artificial intelligence model access without revealing their identity. The system uses zero-knowledge proofs to show that an API request is backed by funded tokens while keeping the underlying private balance hidden.

zkAPI is part of the Open Anonymity Project, an open-source AI privacy initiative. The Open Anonymity Project said its aim is to develop infrastructure where privacy and sovereignty are foundational and people remain in control.

How zkAPI Handles Private API Payments

Users begin by depositing tokens such as Ethereum into a vault contract on the Ethereum network. The contract records the deposited balance as a private note. When a user wants to spend those funds, software on the user's device generates a zero-knowledge proof showing that the request is backed by a funded note without revealing which note or funds are being used.

A zkAPI server checks the proof and issues a temporary API key with a spending cap. The user then sends prompts directly to the AI model provider together with that key. After the key expires, the server deducts the amount used from the user's private balance.

Each payment also publishes a serial number called a “nullifier.” The payment architecture is designed to let a service verify that access has been funded without requiring the underlying payment details to be publicly exposed.

The system can support paid API structures such as pay-per-call access, tiered services and automated requests. Its zero-knowledge design separates proof of payment from the private balance that funded the request.

AI Chat and Agents Are the First Use Cases

The Ethereum Foundation identified AI chat and agents as the first use cases for zkAPI. The system allows users to pay for access to AI models through the temporary API-key process while keeping the funded note behind each request private.

Other listed applications include blockchain queries, image and video generation, VPN bandwidth and machine-to-machine payments between AI agents. Those use cases extend the same private payment mechanism beyond direct AI chat toward other services that charge for API access or automated usage.

Ethereum price was listed at $2,765.00 on October 2.
