HSBC launched RedCoin (RCHKD), its first Hong Kong dollar-denominated stablecoin, through PayMe on Friday, October 23, 2026. More than 3.3 million PayMe users will be able to activate stablecoin wallets in the coming days for transfers and payments to more than 100,000 merchants.

RedCoin is designed to be redeemable one-for-one for Hong Kong dollars, while HSBC Digital Assets Custody provides safekeeping services for the stablecoin. HSBC is also one of Hong Kong’s three commercial banks authorized to issue Hong Kong dollar banknotes.

Maggie Ng, chief executive officer for Hong Kong at HSBC, said:

“Money, assets and information are moving from traditional infrastructure to always-on, data-rich and increasingly programmable digital networks.”

John O'Neill, HSBC's managing director for digital assets and currencies, said the bank plans to introduce more products and expand into “wholesale corporate and institutional use cases.”

HSBC Plans Tokenized Investment Access Through RedCoin

HSBC plans to add RedCoin wallets to its HSBC HK Mobile Banking App later this year. The planned integration would allow customers to use the wallets to subscribe to tokenized investment products, including a new share class of the bank’s Hong Kong dollar money market fund. HSBC also plans to expand RedCoin into wholesale corporate and institutional applications.

The launch adds RedCoin to HSBC’s existing digital-asset activities. The bank has participated in Hong Kong Monetary Authority blockchain initiatives including the e-HKD pilot program and Project Ensemble. HSBC also offers digital bonds for institutional investors through HSBC Orion, HSBC Gold Token for retail clients and the HSBC Tokenised Deposit Service for wholesale payments.

Hong Kong’s Stablecoin Licensing Framework Takes Shape

Hong Kong’s Stablecoins Ordinance took effect in August 2025 and established a licensing framework for fiat-referenced stablecoin issuers. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority issued its first stablecoin issuer licenses in April 2026 to HSBC and Anchorpoint Financial.

Anchorpoint Financial is a joint venture of Standard Chartered, HKT and Animoca Brands. Anchorpoint later began a phased institutional rollout of its HKDAP stablecoin in August through HashKey Exchange, initially targeting eligible institutions and professional investors. HSBC’s RedCoin rollout extends regulated Hong Kong dollar stablecoin access directly to retail users through PayMe.
