Robinhood routes futures through Bitstamp as LIT token drops

Liquidations accelerate the selloff as Lighter trading activity stays resilient

TL;DR

  • LIT fell sharply on September 30 after Robinhood chose Bitstamp for perpetual futures offered to eligible U.S. customers.
  • The selloff pushed LIT into the $3.70 range and triggered $7.2 million in liquidations, mostly from long positions.
  • Lighter Protocol still processed about $1.6 billion in perpetual trades over 24 hours, while its Robinhood integration was not publicly confirmed as terminated.

Lighter’s LIT token fell below $4 on September 30 after Robinhood chose Bitstamp for its U.S. perpetual-futures rollout, reversing part of a September rally that had been fueled by expectations of deeper Robinhood exposure. The LIT price dropped as low as $3.6719 before a modest rebound, while leveraged liquidations intensified the move.

LIT had started September near $4.00 and climbed to about $5.60 by September 24, a gain of roughly 40% following the launch of Bitwise’s Lighter Staking ETP. Trader expectations that Lighter could deepen its integration with Robinhood Wallet also supported the rally before the market abruptly repriced those expectations.

Robinhood said eligible U.S. customers would access crypto perpetual contracts through Bitstamp, which Robinhood acquired for $200 million in 2025. The initial product list reportedly includes BTC, ETH, SOL, XRP, DOGE, ADA, LINK and HYPE, with leverage of up to 10× on BTC and ETH and up to 3× on the other assets.

The announcement pushed LIT through the $4.00 support level that had held since the start of the month. One market snapshot showed the token reaching $3.6719 before recovering to $3.7325. Another put the LIT price at $3.86, down 13% over 24 hours and 26% over seven days, while separate intraday updates placed the token between about $3.70 and $3.89.

Whales Premarket said LIT fell more than 14% within minutes and briefly traded around $3.74 after news that Robinhood had selected Bitstamp for perpetuals available to eligible U.S. users. The account also linked Lighter’s earlier rally to expectations surrounding Robinhood.

Trading activity surged during the decline. One measurement showed LIT volume rising 183% to $204 million, while another 24-hour snapshot showed $254 million in volume.

Lighter activity holds up despite token weakness

The decline spilled into derivatives as leveraged long positions were automatically closed, adding selling pressure. Longs represented roughly 96% of the reported liquidation total. Continued liquidations were identified as a risk to any attempt by LIT to regain the $4.00 area.

Lighter Protocol’s underlying trading activity did not fall in line with the token price. The platform processed approximately $1.6 billion in perpetual trades during the preceding 24 hours and carried about $590 million in open interest. Fees also continued to be generated, indicating that traders remained active on the platform during the LIT selloff.

That divergence leaves the market repricing expected future economics more quickly than current protocol usage. A decline in activity and fee generation would provide evidence that weaker LIT sentiment was spreading into actual platform use, while sustained trading would leave protocol activity intact despite pressure on the token.

Technical levels highlighted before the Robinhood news put primary support at $3.64 and the near-term recovery level at $3.92. Holding support and reclaiming $3.92 was presented as the bullish scenario, while continued trading between the two levels represented the base case. A sustained break below $3.64 was identified as increasing downside risk toward $2.78.

Robinhood’s Bitstamp decision does not establish that its existing relationship with Lighter has ended. Robinhood previously integrated Lighter crypto perpetuals into Robinhood Wallet, and its materials continued to describe Lighter as the platform used in eligible jurisdictions. A cited account of the development also said there was no public confirmation that the integration had been terminated.
