Excluding the layer-2 network, crypto transaction revenue fell 6% from the second quarter to $94 million. Crypto revenue had totaled $100 million in the previous quarter and $268 million in the third quarter of 2025.Crypto trading activity nevertheless increased sequentially. Quarterly volume rose 23% to $49.8 billion, including $20.6 billion through the Robinhood app and $29.2 billion through&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/exchange/bitstamp">Bitstamp</a>. Other figures in Robinhood’s earnings coverage rounded those amounts to $50 billion, $21 billion and $29 billion, respectively. On a year-over-year basis, total crypto volume was down 38%, with Robinhood app volume and Bitstamp volume down 48% and 28%, respectively.Robinhood Chain, a layer-2&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/blockchain">blockchain</a> built on&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/arbitrum-arb">Arbitrum</a>, processed more than $80 billion in&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/Decentralized-Crypto-Exchange-dex">decentralized exchange</a> volume and generated more than $50 million in fees during the quarter. Its recognized contribution to Robinhood’s crypto revenue was smaller than those network fees. By the end of August, the network had generated about $3.13 million in fees over a 30-day period, compared with $2.47 million for&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/ethereum-eth">Ethereum</a> and $2.89 million for Base over the same period. The network’s early activity was driven by meme coins rather than the tokenized stocks it was designed to support. Robinhood Chain later surpassed $100 billion in cumulative trading volume roughly three and a half months after its mainnet launch.<div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>Prediction Markets Generate More Revenue Than Crypto</h2>Prediction markets remained a larger revenue source than crypto during the quarter. Event contracts generated $173 million, up from $156 million in the second quarter, when the business first moved ahead of crypto revenue.Customers traded a record 16.4 billion event contracts during the quarter, more than seven times the year-earlier total. The products cover outcomes including sports, elections and economic data, paying $1 when a contract’s specified outcome occurs.Rothera, Robinhood’s derivatives exchange investment alongside Susquehanna International Group, contributed $28 million to event-contract revenue. Robinhood said Rothera exceeded $100 million in annualized revenue during its first full quarter and had processed more than 6.4 billion contracts since launch.Robinhood has also taken minority stakes in&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/exchange/crypto_com">Crypto.com</a> and prediction-market spinoff OG.com. CEO Vlad Tenev had said in December, “I believe we’re at the very beginning of a prediction market supercycle,” as the company expanded its offering with NFL player contracts and parlay-style products.<div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>Earnings Miss Expectations Despite Record Revenue</h2>Robinhood’s record revenue did not translate into an earnings beat. Diluted earnings came to $0.51 per share, down from $0.61 a year earlier. Attached earnings coverage cited analyst expectations of $0.55 per share, while another estimate put the consensus at about $0.56. Revenue of $1.42 billion was also slightly below an expectation of roughly $1.43 billion.Net income of $476 million compared with $556 million a year earlier and $573 million in the second quarter, declines of 14% and 17%, respectively. Results included a $67 million unrealized loss on Robinhood Ventures Fund I, which reduced earnings by $0.07 per share. Adjusted earnings per share were $0.60, down 3% from a year earlier.Other transaction businesses posted stronger growth.&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/options-contracts">Options</a> generated $399 million in revenue, up 31%, while equities revenue increased 41% to $121 million.Robinhood ended the quarter with 28.7 million funded customers, a 7% year-over-year increase. Total platform assets rose 19% to $396 billion, while Robinhood Gold subscriptions reached a record 5.2 million. The company narrowed its 2026 outlook for adjusted operating expenses and stock-based compensation to between $2.675 billion and $2.75 billion. The previous range set in July was $2.675 billion to $2.775 billion.<div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>Robinhood Expands Its Crypto Business Beyond Trading</h2>Robinhood also expanded its international and blockchain operations during the quarter. The company launched crypto trading in the United Kingdom and received authorization from the Dubai Financial Services Authority to offer trading and custody services, with products expected to begin rolling out in Dubai in 2027.A separate agreement with&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/xrp-xrp">Ripple</a> will bring the&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/ripple-usd-rlusd">RLUSD</a>&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/stablecoin">stablecoin</a> to Robinhood’s retail trading ecosystem, Robinhood Chain and Bitstamp, with an in-app rollout planned later this year. RLUSD had a market value above $2.5 billion. The agreement also covers institutional settlement using the&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/xrp-xrp">XRP</a> Ledger, Ripple treasury-management technology and lending services for Bitstamp traders.Robinhood crypto chief Johann Kerbrat also confirmed a $25 million bitcoin&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/allocation">allocation</a> to the company’s corporate holdings earlier in the month, describing the purchase as a diversification measure.Robinhood shares fell after the earnings release. One after-hours snapshot showed HOOD down 5.5% to $89.22, leaving the stock roughly 22% lower for the year at that point. This article has been refined and enhanced by ChatGPT.

The companies plan to examine three areas: technological infrastructure, business and distribution opportunities, and regulatory requirements for connecting tokenized money market funds with JPYSC. They also plan to engage financial institutions and other businesses about broader cooperation, with the stated goal of supporting onchain finance in Japan and other markets.Money market funds primarily invest in short-term financial instruments, while tokenization represents ownership interests through blockchain-based records. Connecting tokenized fund shares with a yen stablecoin could make it easier for eligible institutions to move between digital investments and digital cash without relying entirely on conventional settlement processes. The arrangement would also examine how yen-based payments could interact with tokenized financial assets.SBI Chairman Yoshitaka Kitao said Japan should “prepare early and build the foundations for the next generation of financial markets” as finance moves onchain. Startale CEO Sota Watanabe called connecting JPYSC with tokenized money market funds “an important step toward building the foundations of onchain finance.”<div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>JPYSC Provides the Yen-Denominated Settlement Layer</h2>JPYSC is a yen-denominated trust-type stablecoin issued through SBI Shinsei Trust Bank under Japan's regulated trust-based stablecoin framework and distributed by SBI VC Trade. Developed with Startale, JPYSC is intended to support payments, settlements and transactions involving tokenized financial assets.SBI has separately expanded its digital-finance activity through an&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/ondo-ondo">Ondo</a> Finance partnership focused on tokenized Japanese equities. On October 16, SBI and Startale also announced plans to explore&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/interoperability">interoperability</a> between JPYSC and Open USD, a dollar-denominated stablecoin initiative. That effort is separate from the BlackRock agreement, although both involve connecting components of institutional digital finance.<div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>BlackRock Brings Existing Tokenization Work</h2>BlackRock already operates BUIDL, its tokenized liquidity fund, which has expanded to&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/avalanche-avax">Avalanche</a> and other blockchain networks. Its institutional tokenization work has also included stablecoin-related changes intended to accommodate digital-asset businesses, as well as BUIDL integrations showing how tokenized fund shares can interact with digital payment assets. The new agreement does not establish that BUIDL will be integrated with JPYSC.BlackRock has separately supported tokenized portfolio products developed with Ondo Finance. SBI contributes knowledge of Japan's financial regulations and distribution infrastructure, while Startale brings blockchain-development capabilities that include infrastructure for tokenized securities. The agreement comes as financial institutions examine whether blockchain-based systems can reduce settlement friction while maintaining existing investor protections. This article has been refined and enhanced by ChatGPT.

The company said:<blockquote>“We failed to fulfill our commitment to erase customer data on time, and we accept responsibility for this failure.”</blockquote>It has shortened the retention period to 90 days and requested deletion of overdue records. The attacker also obtained Keystone’s WebAuth device-authentication key. Keystone said possession of the key could allow counterfeit hardware to pass its official authenticity checks. Newly manufactured wallets will therefore use a replacement key, while existing old-key inventory will be destroyed and pending shipments remain suspended.<div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>Foundation Reports Phishing Emails From Official Domains</h2>Foundation, maker of the Passport&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/bitcoin-btc">Bitcoin</a> hardware wallet,&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/FoundationHQ/status/2114564656199069844">disclosed</a> a separate security incident after scam emails were sent from its official domains. The company traced the unauthorized messages to one or more compromised Cloudflare API keys and revoked all API keys late on October 25. Foundation said Passport devices and stored funds were not compromised. The phishing emails told Passport users their funds were at risk and attempted to push them toward new recovery phrases or fraudulent websites. Recipients reported that messages contained personal information including names, addresses, email addresses and previous purchase information.Foundation CEO Zach Herbert later said “some of our backend infrastructure was compromised via a vulnerability in a self hosted app,” which he identified as Cal.com. Attackers may also have accessed Foundation’s customer-support inbox. Foundation said its hardware remained secure. The Foundation incident followed earlier problems involving other hardware-wallet companies. Trezor users received a fake “Critical Security Alert” through a third-party email provider in September, while a separate breach at shipping partner ShipMonk exposed names, addresses, phone numbers, emails and order information belonging to around 80,700 Trezor customers. Trezor said devices, private keys and wallet backups were not compromised. Casa CEO Nick Neuman also said BitBox customers appeared to receive similar phishing emails.Other incidents cited in the attached reports included a&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/safepal-sfp">SafePal</a> order-tracking bug that exposed almost 40,000 customers and&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/news/ledger-cryptobilis-hardware-implant">compromised Ledger wallets</a> sold through CryptoBilis. Developers confirmed that at least one user lost Bitcoin after unknowingly approving a fraudulent transaction while trying to increase a pending payment’s fee.The flaw affected Electrum versions earlier than 4.8.3. Attackers could substitute an attacker-controlled transaction in the wallet’s unconfirmed history and use addresses matching the final four characters of the intended recipient. If the victim manually increased the fee, Electrum generated fresh signatures that made the substituted payment valid without exposing the user’s private keys.Electrum released version 4.8.3 after confirming active exploitation. The developers said clients connected exclusively to trusted servers were not exposed to the attack and advised users to verify complete recipient addresses and payment amounts when signing transactions. This article has been refined and enhanced by ChatGPT.

The exchange attributed the loss to an internal sweeping failure involving deposits that users continued sending to the old addresses. CoinDCX said those deposits were still credited to users, but the subsequent transfer of the assets into its main wallets failed. The company said it absorbed the resulting operational loss.CoinDCX said its automated sweeping service was supposed to move deposits from those deprecated addresses into active wallets but “had failed for a particular period.” Trading and withdrawals continued as normal, according to the exchange, which also said it would increase monitoring of its older infrastructure.CoinDCX later acknowledged that its review took longer than it should have. “It took us some time to do the thorough review of the deprecated infrastructure and confirm the sequence of events. We could have been more proactive, but we shared this update as soon as we had the complete picture,” the exchange said.<div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>CoinDCX Reverses Earlier Position on Wallet Activity</h2>The confirmation followed an earlier denial from CoinDCX leadership. On October 22, researcher Darcy flagged suspicious&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/tron-trx">TRON</a> transfers. CEO Sumit Gupta described the warnings as a possible “false alarm” and said hackers appeared to be reusing addresses compromised during the previous incident. CoinDCX also said some reports about the activity were misleading.<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/blockchain">Blockchain</a> investigator ZachXBT<a href="https://coin360.com/news/coindcx-16m-hack-denial-wallet-activity">&nbsp;challenged that explanation</a>. He pointed to activity showing that wallets described as retired had still been used for deposits in April and May 2026. The exchange’s later acknowledgment of the failed sweeping process confirmed that funds had continued reaching deprecated addresses after users had been advised not to use them.<div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>Bitquery Traces USDT Movements From CoinDCX Wallets</h2>Bitquery’s on-chain investigation showed activity across multiple wallets associated with CoinDCX and provided a timeline for the movement of the funds.<div class="raw-html-embed"><tdstyle="border:1pxsolid#fff;padding:8px;color:#fff;">FundsfrozenbyTether<tdstyle="border:1pxsolid#fff;padding:8px;color:#fff;">2.21 million across nine wallets on October 22 </tdstyle="border:1pxsolid#fff;padding:8px;color:#fff;"></tdstyle="border:1pxsolid#fff;padding:8px;color:#fff;"><table style="border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;"> <thead> <tr> <th style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; text-align: left; color: #fff;">Metric</th> <th style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; text-align: left; color: #fff;">Finding</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Initial tracking date</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">October 21</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Wallets linked to transfers</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">40</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Largest&nbsp;wallet balance tracked</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">$15.82 million from 88 transactions</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Last regular transfer</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">12:14 UTC</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">First suspected theft movement</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">12:19 UTC</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Fee top-ups tracked</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">276 since August</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Funds sent toward exchanges</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">About&nbsp;9.63millionthroughsixintermediatewalletswithin18hourstoOKX,BinanceandGate</td></tr><tr></tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Funds remaining in tracked wallets</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">At least $30,000 in Bitquery’s October 23 snapshot</td> </tr> </tbody> </table></div>Bitquery also observed sweeping activity after the suspected theft. The two figures measure different things: reported assets and trading activity. They do not show the exchange’s customer liabilities or establish whether deposits are fully backed.CoinDCX’s September report recorded 23.1 million registered users and a 57.07 crore INR Crypto Investor Protection Fund. The exchange had previously lost roughly $44 million during the July 2025 hack. Separately, TRM Labs found that infrastructure and operational compromises accounted for roughly 76% of crypto hack losses during the first half of 2026 despite representing 15% of incidents.<a href="https://coin360.com/review/coinbase">Coinbase</a> invested in CoinDCX in October 2025 as part of an expansion into India and the Middle East. Chainalysis ranked India sixth globally for grassroots crypto adoption. Those developments preceded the latest scrutiny over CoinDCX’s handling of its deprecated wallet infrastructure and its reversal from an initial breach denial to confirmation of the loss. This article has been refined and enhanced by ChatGPT.

BLOOM’s work extends beyond cross-border settlement to corporate cash management, trade finance and payments executed by AI agents within predefined limits. Singapore has also separately tested a wholesale central bank digital currency.Participants include Airwallex, Circle,&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/review/coinbase">Coinbase</a>, JPMorgan, Mastercard,&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/xrp-xrp">Ripple</a>, Standard Chartered, Stripe, Visa and the World Bank Group. The expanded policymaker group brings Malaysia and Thailand directly into work examining how regulated digital money can move across borders and different financial systems.<div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>BLOOM Tests Interoperability, Compliance and Cross-Border Settlement</h2>MAS said the work will examine how banks handle different forms of digital money in cross-border transactions and how separate networks can interoperate. The initiative will also test safeguards including identity checks, sanctions screening and transaction controls.<blockquote>“The future of finance will involve multiple forms of digital money operating across different institutions and markets,” MAS Deputy Managing Director Leong Sing Chiong said.</blockquote>Bank Negara Malaysia Deputy Governor Aznan bin Abdul Aziz said cross-border payments using multiple forms of digital money were becoming a more tangible prospect. Bank of Thailand Deputy Governor Daranee Saeju said BLOOM would help the central bank examine regulatory approaches to tokenized money, particularly for cross-border payments and wholesale settlement.Malaysia had already begun work on related digital-money use cases. Bank Negara Malaysia announced in February that three initiatives would test ringgit stablecoins and tokenized deposits for domestic and cross-border wholesale payments in 2026.Ripple separately announced its participation in BLOOM in March. The company said it would test trade payments using&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/ripple-usd-rlusd">RLUSD</a> on the&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/xrp-xrp">XRP</a> Ledger. The delay applies to Hoodi testing and does not mean Glamsterdam itself has been canceled. The Ethereum Foundation&nbsp;<a href="https://blog.ethereum.org/2026/10/22/glamsterdam-hoodi-delay">announced</a> the postponement after developers sought more time to study how the proposed gas changes could interact with&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/smart-contracts">smart contracts</a> already deployed on Ethereum&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/mainnet">mainnet</a>. ChainSecurity&nbsp;<a href="https://x.com/chain_security/status/2113303061078671814">said</a> on October 22 that it was in responsible disclosure with affected projects after finding “13 real-world examples” of the security issue.<blockquote>“It has just been decided to delay the Glamsterdam hard fork on the Hoodi testnet because of security impacts we identified,” ChainSecurity wrote.</blockquote><figure class="image"><img alt="tweet-2113303061078671814.webp" src="https://cdn.coin360.com/tweet_2113303061078671814_d451db7747.webp"></figure>Ethereum researcher Christine Kim said&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/node">node</a> operators should revert to an older software version that does not schedule the upgrade or wait for their execution client team to release a version canceling it. Preston Van Loon, a developer working on the Prysm consensus client, said a Prysm release removing Glamsterdam from Hoodi’s schedule would follow the same day.<figure class="image"><img alt="tweet_2113303447080476996_20261023_200738_via_10015_io.webp" src="https://cdn.coin360.com/tweet_2113303447080476996_20261023_200738_via_10015_io_b0fed89bb7.webp"></figure><div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>Glamsterdam Gas Changes Could Alter Contract Failure Behavior</h2>The security concern centers on changes to how Ethereum accounts for gas when contracts create or access&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/blockchain">blockchain</a> state. Glamsterdam introduces EIP-8037 and EIP-8038, along with a separate pool of gas for creating new state. Some deployed contracts rely on gas checks or expect an external call to run out of gas under specific conditions. ChainSecurity said those assumptions can help prevent insufficient gas griefing, where an attacker deliberately provides too little gas so that a valid operation fails and becomes recorded as a permanent failure.Glamsterdam changes those mechanics. Gas can be returned or refilled after a failed call, while repricing can alter how much gas an operation needs. That can leave a contract with a different gas balance from what its existing logic expects.<blockquote>“Even with unchanged contract code, a failure path that previously reverted can now complete,” ChainSecurity said.</blockquote>The firm urged projects to review their contracts. The Ethereum Foundation is assessing how many deployed contracts could be affected. The findings indicate a compatibility issue involving existing contract assumptions rather than a deliberate change to those applications’ underlying code.<div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>Hoodi Delay Leaves Mainnet Timeline Open</h2>Glamsterdam has already been activated on Sepolia, another Ethereum test network. The Hoodi postponement therefore affects the next stage of testing rather than reversing the upgrade across Ethereum’s test networks.<div class="raw-html-embed"><table style="border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;"> <thead> <tr> <th style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; text-align: left; color: #fff;">Network or Upgrade</th> <th style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; text-align: left; color: #fff;">Status</th> <th style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; text-align: left; color: #fff;">Key Detail</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Hoodi</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Delayed</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">The planned gas-limit increase to 200 million was removed with the canceled activation.</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Sepolia</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Activated</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Glamsterdam went live October 6 with a&nbsp;gas limit of nearly 200 million, more than three times mainnet’s 60 million.</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Ethereum mainnet</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Not finalized</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Developers had aimed for the end of 2026 and discussed possible December activation dates.</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Hegotá</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Future upgrade</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Expected in 2027 and could introduce native privacy features.</td> </tr> </tbody> </table></div>Glamsterdam also includes block-level access lists, which allow computers to check transactions in parallel, and enshrined proposer-builder separation, which moves the process for deciding who assembles&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/blocks">blocks</a> into Ethereum’s protocol rules. No replacement Hoodi activation date has been announced. The application seeks&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/bitcoin-btc">Bitcoin</a> and other assets that prosecutors argue are proceeds of a large fundraising fraud. A parallel legal fight remains active in London, where the UK High Court has ruled that Chinese law should govern victims’ claims to the seized cryptocurrency. The Tianjin court said it accepted the prosecutors’ application on September 28 and published its notice on October 13. The court said evidence showed Qian had committed fundraising fraud, mainly in Tianjin’s Hedong district. At a&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/coin/bitcoin-btc">Bitcoin price</a> of around $82,000,&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/review/coin360-dex">COIN360</a> data put the seized Bitcoin’s value at about $5.1 billion. The Chinese proceeding does not itself determine that all confiscated assets will go to the government or that victims will immediately receive compensation.<div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>Prosecutors Link Assets to Multibillion-Yuan Fundraising Scheme</h2>Prosecutors identified Qian as the controller of Tianjin Lantian Gerui Electronic Technology. Between April 2014 and August 2017, the company allegedly sold unlicensed wealth-management products across China while promising guaranteed returns. The scheme raised more than 40.378 billion yuan, or about $5.7 billion, from more than 102,000 investors. Prosecutors said investor losses exceeded 19.977 billion yuan as much of the money was allegedly diverted from genuine business activity.Prosecutors allege funds were instead used to repay earlier investors, operate fictitious investment projects, buy Bitcoin and purchase property, cars, jewelry and other assets. Qian fled China in July 2017 with computers containing Bitcoin wallets and later reached the UK, where some of the cryptocurrency was converted into other assets. British authorities ultimately seized Bitcoin along with additional cryptocurrencies, cash, jewelry and investment holdings connected to the case. The Chinese confiscation application also covers several other cryptocurrencies and financial assets:<div class="raw-html-embed"><table style="border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%;"> <thead> <tr> <th style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; text-align: left; color: #fff;">Asset</th> <th style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; text-align: left; color: #fff;">Amount or Scope</th> </tr> </thead> <tbody> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Bitcoin Cash</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">About 72,746 units</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Bitcoin Gold</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">About 72,746 units</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Bitcoin SV</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">About 72,746 units</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">XRP</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Around 3.6 million</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Dogecoin</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Some 70 million</td> </tr> <tr> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">Other assets</td> <td style="border: 1px solid #fff; padding: 8px; color: #fff;">U.S. dollar, euro and pound cash, jewelry, bank balances and investment portfolios</td> </tr> </tbody> </table></div>UK authorities had already converted the listed non-Bitcoin crypto holdings and placed the proceeds in an interest-bearing account. Chinese prosecutors argue that the seized property should be recovered, returned to victims where applicable and otherwise confiscated. Because Qian had been a wanted fugitive for more than a year, prosecutors said the case falls under Chinese rules allowing confiscation proceedings without the suspect being present.Victims can apply to participate through a WeChat mini-program. Those who do not join the proceeding can still receive repayments from recovered assets. The notice period runs for six months before the court hears the confiscation case. That process leaves the distribution of the assets subject to the court proceedings rather than automatically transferring the entire pool to either the Chinese government or the victims.<div class="page-break" style="page-break-after:always;">&nbsp;</div><h2>UK High Court Puts Chinese Law at Center of Bitcoin Claims</h2>Qian was sentenced to 11 years and eight months in the UK in November 2025 after pleading guilty to acquiring and possessing criminal property. Weeks after the guilty plea, UK prosecutors told the High Court that they were planning a compensation scheme for victims. They later said victims could instead be compensated through a redress scheme administered from China.Unnamed UK Treasury officials had also privately raised whether the seized Bitcoin could help&nbsp;<a href="https://coin360.com/glossary/wallet-address">address</a> a shortfall in the country’s public finances, the Financial Times reported at the time. Legal experts, meanwhile, argued that victims could be entitled to compensation if they established a sufficient link to the cryptocurrency. AMBCrypto described the London proceeding as involving £3.8 billion, or about $5 billion, in seized Bitcoin. The High Court ruled on October 12 that Chinese law should govern thousands of victims’ claims to the coins, improving the UK government’s chances of retaining the assets. Fieldfisher, the law firm representing claimants, said it is seeking to appeal. The ruling did not decide whether the victims own the Bitcoin because evidence on the substance of Chinese law had not yet been heard.David Phillips, a dispute resolution partner at London law firm SMB, wrote that the decision shows that “a victim cannot necessarily recover cryptocurrency simply by proving: ‘That Bitcoin was bought with money taken from me.’”<blockquote>“Cryptoassets may operate without borders, but proprietary rights in them remain capable of raising intensely territorial questions of applicable law,” Phillips added.</blockquote>Detective Sergeant Isabella Grotto, the lead investigating officer in the case, also described the asset-tracing effort as unusually complex:&nbsp;<blockquote>“This was a long, complex, and unprecedented investigation into the laundering of criminal proceeds through cryptocurrency. Over a number of years, significant efforts were made to move and disguise the funds and convert them into assets in the UK.”</blockquote>This article has been refined and enhanced by ChatGPT.
