Solana Shanghai event postponed following sudden registration surge capacity limits

Police reports at the venue sharpen questions over the blockchain’s China expansion

TL;DR

  • Solana postponed its Shanghai gathering after registrations quadrupled overnight and exceeded the attendance cap filed with local authorities.
  • Attendees reported law enforcement at the Shangri-La Hotel and waits of more than an hour.
  • Binance founder Changpeng Zhao questioned Solana’s awareness of local policy but separately reiterated his support for blockchain adoption.

The Solana Foundation postponed its Accelerate China 2026 gathering in Shanghai on Oct. 16, 2026, after an overnight registration surge exceeded the event cap filed with local authorities. Organizers cited venue logistics and capacity, while attendees separately reported law enforcement officers at the Shangri-La Hotel and being unable to enter. The event notice described the move as a postponement rather than a cancellation.

Lily Liu said the turnout grew far beyond what organizers had planned. “event registrations quadrupled overnight, far exceeding the event cap we had registered with local authorities, and we had no way to prevent people from overwhelming the venue.” Liu said the foundation postponed the gathering until it could “better accommodate the breadth and scale of our community,” and apologized to people who had traveled for the event.

Attendees Report Police Presence and Long Entry Delays

An attendee named Olivia said eight or nine law enforcement officers were standing guard at the Shanghai venue. She said participants waited outside for more than an hour without gaining entry, while other accounts placed the delay at approximately 90 minutes. Olivia also described one attendee being questioned about why he had come to the gathering before identifying himself as a blogger seeking traffic.

Organizers later told participants that venue logistics required the morning program to be postponed. The Shanghai gathering was scheduled as the opening stop of a four-city tour across mainland China. Reports also cited photos and firsthand accounts indicating officials were blocking access to the venue, while noting that the Accelerate Shanghai program did not direct any talk specifically at cryptocurrency.

CZ Questions Solana’s Handling of Local Policy

Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, reacted to the disruption by questioning whether Solana had understood the local environment. “Sad to see. Looks like they really didn’t know the local policies?” Zhao said. He also pointed to an earlier disruption involving a Solana event in Shenzhen.

That earlier episode occurred in October 2025. Wu Blockchain reported that local police cleared the Shenzhen venue and stopped subsequent project roadshows. The gathering had also faced public-safety concerns after an overcrowding situation, and Lily Liu attended the event.

CZ had taken a different tone before the Shanghai disruption. He had congratulated Solana for establishing an office and advertising in China, noting that BNB Chain had not achieved the same physical presence. CZ viewed those developments as a possible sign that China could be loosening its crypto restrictions.

Social media speculation later suggested CZ’s publicity around Solana’s expansion might have drawn attention from Chinese authorities. CZ rejected that suggestion, saying a Solana advertisement on a Shanghai building had reportedly been removed within 10 minutes. He said he only became aware of the advertisement 12 to 24 hours after it had already appeared.

China’s Crypto Restrictions Remain in Place

Mainland China continues to prohibit cryptocurrency trading services. The People’s Bank of China and seven government departments issued revised virtual-currency guidance in February 2026 that classifies cryptocurrency-related business activities as illegal financial activities. The rules cover virtual-currency trading, token issuance, some digital-asset-linked financial products, fiat-to-crypto exchanges, crypto-to-crypto exchanges and transaction-related information and pricing services.

Chinese authorities have separately outlined plans for a national blockchain infrastructure network. China’s Ministry of State Security has also said that crypto anonymity is an illusion because blockchain transactions leave permanent records, while linking cryptocurrencies to money laundering, cyberattacks and espionage recruitment.

Despite his criticism of the Shanghai episode, CZ reiterated that his position extends across competing blockchain networks. “I'm always supportive of any blockchain making any progress in any country,” he said. He listed Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB, XRP, SOL, HYPE, ZEC, SIGN and stablecoins among the digital assets he is bullish on.
