Bank integrates spot crypto execution with institutional banking, settlement and custody infrastructure

TL;DR

  • Standard Chartered launched deliverable Bitcoin and Ether spot trading for eligible institutional clients in the UAE.
  • Clients receive the underlying crypto assets and can settle through Standard Chartered or another custodian.
  • Standard Chartered says no other global systemically important bank offers the same deliverable spot service.

Standard Chartered launched deliverable spot trading in Bitcoin and Ether for eligible institutional clients in the United Arab Emirates on September 3, 2026, allowing customers to buy, receive and settle the underlying digital assets rather than gain exposure through a derivative that only tracks their value.

The service operates through Standard Chartered’s Dubai International Financial Centre subsidiary and connects to electronic channels and foreign-exchange interfaces already used by institutional customers. Clients can buy and sell BTC and ETH for immediate delivery and settle the assets through a custodian of their choice, including Standard Chartered’s own digital-asset custody platform.

Deliverable spot trading means ownership and settlement of the underlying Bitcoin or Ether transfers to the customer rather than ending with a cash-settled position. The model places crypto execution inside Standard Chartered’s institutional banking relationship while still allowing customers to use an outside custodian for safekeeping.

Standard Chartered builds on earlier custody and trading launches

The UAE service extends a digital-asset infrastructure buildout that began with custody in September 2024, when hedge fund Brevan Howard Digital became the opening client. Standard Chartered later introduced institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading through its UK branch in July 2025 and added USDC minting in London in July 2026.

The Dubai-related launches cleared the Dubai Financial Services Authority. The rollout described across Standard Chartered’s custody, trading and stablecoin-related services has taken place in Dubai and London rather than the United States.

Standard Chartered also recently bought out minority shareholders in Zodia Custody and separated Zodia Solutions as a technology business. The changes form part of the bank’s broader organization of custody, technology and bank-delivered digital-asset services.

For institutional customers, the UAE structure combines crypto execution with established banking processes used for cash management and foreign exchange while preserving a choice of custodian. Institutional market access must also fit approval processes, counterparty limits, reporting systems, treasury controls and asset-segregation requirements.

The model does not remove the market, custody, legal or technology risks associated with digital assets, but it reduces the need for institutions to assemble execution, banking and settlement through entirely separate relationships.

G-SIB status puts the launch in a different category

Standard Chartered is one of 29 banks designated as global systemically important banks by the Financial Stability Board. The FSB’s 2025 list places Standard Chartered in the lowest risk bucket, carrying a 1% capital surcharge.

JPMorgan is positioned three G-SIB tiers above Standard Chartered, while Citigroup and HSBC are two tiers above it. Standard Chartered says no rival G-SIB currently offers the same deliverable Bitcoin and Ether spot-trading service.

That distinction makes Standard Chartered the first among the systemically important banks identified in the material to provide this form of institutional crypto execution. Unlike a cash-settled derivative, the service requires actual digital assets to move through settlement and ultimately be safeguarded by the bank or another custodian selected by the client.

The commercial model also allows Standard Chartered to participate in revenue generated from the trading spread, settlement and custody rather than leaving those activities entirely to crypto-native exchanges and specialist service providers.

Citi, by comparison, is still preparing Bitcoin custody, while Standard Chartered has operated digital-asset custody since its UAE launch two years earlier.

Institutional rollout arrives well below Bitcoin’s record

Bitcoin stood 38% below its October 2025 record when the UAE desk opened, placing the launch during a substantially weaker market rather than alongside a fresh high.

The service is limited to eligible institutional clients and is not a retail crypto rollout. Standard Chartered has initially focused on Bitcoin and Ether, allowing the bank to address established institutional demand without operating a broad token marketplace.

Banks competing for institutional crypto business can offer existing customer relationships and integrated cash-management infrastructure, while crypto-native firms can provide broader asset coverage, round-the-clock markets and greater sector specialization. Standard Chartered’s custody-choice model allows institutions to use the bank for execution without requiring them to use the bank for safekeeping.

The UAE launch therefore brings deliverable Bitcoin and Ether execution alongside foreign exchange, settlement and custody within a regulated banking framework, while preserving institutional choice over where the underlying assets are ultimately held.
