Lari-backed token would expand Tether’s multi-currency stablecoin strategy

TL;DR

  • Tether plans to launch GELT, a Georgian lari-backed stablecoin supported by the Georgian government.
  • The token is designed for faster settlement, lower transaction costs and programmable payments.
  • Key launch details, including blockchain networks, redemption structure and rollout timing, remain undisclosed.

Tether plans to launch GELT, a stablecoin tied to the Georgian lari, with support from the Georgian government as part of a broader push beyond U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoins. The announcement was released on May 25, 2026, and positions GELT as a local-currency digital asset for payments, settlement and cross-border commerce.

Tether described GELT as a “digital representation” of the Georgian lari. The company said the token is intended to support lower transaction costs, faster settlement and programmable payments across Georgia’s digital financial system. The project also extends Tether’s stablecoin strategy into national-currency markets, rather than keeping its focus entirely on dollar-linked products.

Georgia Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said the partnership reflects the country’s digital finance ambitions. “Together with visionary partners like Tether, Georgia is laying the foundations for a more connected, transparent, and digitally empowered financial world,” Kobakhidze said.

Tether Links GELT To Regulatory Alignment

Tether said Georgia’s digital asset framework was designed to achieve “substantive compatibility” with emerging U.S. stablecoin regulations, including the GENIUS Act. That framing places GELT inside a broader regulatory strategy, with the company presenting the token as part of a jurisdiction-specific stablecoin model rather than an isolated product launch.

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino said stablecoins are no longer a “niche” financial instrument and are becoming part of the infrastructure layer for global finance. “Georgia has moved early to create serious regulatory architecture for digital assets and stablecoins, and that clarity creates the foundation for real innovation and adoption,” Ardoino said.

Tether has not disclosed GELT’s final structure, rollout plan or regulatory implementation. The company also has not identified which blockchains will support the token, though the planned product is described as fully backed by the Georgian lari and issued on multiple blockchains.

GELT Adds To Tether’s Fiat-Backed Stablecoin Portfolio

GELT would add another national-currency product to Tether’s stablecoin lineup. Tether introduced MXNT, a Mexican peso-pegged stablecoin, in May 2022, and the token remains active. Tether previously launched EURT, a euro-pegged stablecoin, but later wound it down, with redemptions ceasing in November 2025 because of regulatory shifts in Europe.

Earlier in 2026, Tether officially launched USAT to target the U.S. market after Congress passed stablecoin legislation in the form of the GENIUS Act during the previous summer. USDT remains primarily backed by USD-denominated reserves and has a cited market cap of $189 billion, but USDT is not available to U.S. clients.

The company’s broader strategy now includes jurisdiction-specific fiat stablecoins that can operate alongside its dollar-linked products. GELT fits that model by targeting a smaller national currency with potential use in domestic payments, remittances and regional settlement.

Georgia offers a specific use case because remittances account for over 10% of GDP, mainly from Russia, Greece and the United States. A lari-backed stablecoin could support faster transfers and reduce dependence on correspondent banking, provided liquidity, redemption access and payment integrations develop after launch.

Central Bank Questions Remain Open

The project may create tension with the National Bank of Georgia, which has historically been cautious about private stablecoins and has focused on its own digital lari pilot. GELT would give Georgia a private lari-linked digital currency before the central-bank-led digital lari reaches wider adoption.

Stablecoins remain heavily concentrated in dollar-linked products, with USDT and USDC dominating over 90% of the market. GELT therefore represents a smaller-currency test case for whether private stablecoin issuers can build useful local-currency rails in markets that are not already dominated by dollar liquidity.

Several operational questions remain unresolved. Tether has not disclosed GELT’s blockchains, reserve disclosures, banking partners, redemption mechanics, liquidity providers, merchant integrations or launch timeline. Those details will determine whether GELT becomes a functional payment asset or stays mostly symbolic after launch.
