New Era for Cross-Chain Swaps

Uniswap Labs, the company behind one of the largest decentralized exchanges, has introduced permissionless bridging across nine networks, marking a significant shift for users navigating the complexities of cross-chain asset management.

This move comes as a response to growing demands for a seamless cross-chain experience, allowing users to swap assets like Ether (ETH), Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), and stablecoins such as Tether (USDT), USD Coin (USDC), and Dai (DAI) across Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible chains without relying on external bridges.

The integration, available via Uniswap’s wallet and web interface, aims to solve one of the long-standing challenges in decentralized finance (DeFi): moving assets between blockchains without the need for external platforms or dealing with time-consuming transaction times.

Uniswap Labs acknowledged the need for this feature in a recent blog post, noting that “moving assets between chains has been challenging” due to the often cumbersome nature of external bridges. With this release, users can now access a more streamlined experience that prioritizes speed and ease.

The bridging feature spans nine popular EVM chains, including Ethereum, Base, ArbitrumPolygonOP Mainnet, Zora, Blast, World Chain, and ZKsync. Powered by Across Protocol, the system operates through a decentralized network of liquidity pools and relayers. Unlike traditional bridges that rely on more centralized systems, Across’ permissionless design allows for greater flexibility and autonomy.

Uniswap CEO Hayden Adams remarked on the significance of this move, highlighting that Ethereum’s scaling improvements, while beneficial, have led to fragmentation in user experiences. He noted that this new feature aligns with the company’s goal of setting new standards for cross-chain swaps.

The bridging technology leverages the ERC-7683 token standard, a tool introduced earlier this year by Uniswap Labs and Across Protocol. This standard aims to unify cross-chain intents, enabling developers to tap into the broader EVM ecosystem while maintaining focus on individual chains. ERC-7683 has already garnered attention within the crypto community, including Ethereum founder Vitalik Buterin, signaling its potential for wider adoption.

Uniswap Labs’ decision to roll out permissionless bridging follows feedback from its user base, which ranked bridging as the most requested feature in a poll conducted on X (formerly Twitter) in July. As Uniswap continues to innovate, the recent unveiling of its layer-2 network, Unichain, built on the OP Stack, adds another layer of intrigue to the platform’s future. Once Unichain’s mainnet goes live, Across will serve as its default bridge, further enhancing Uniswap’s ecosystem.
