Linea’s Path to Full Decentralization

Consensys has announced a bold move to decentralize governance of its Linea network, beginning with the establishment of the Switzerland-based Linea Association. This newly formed entity will steer the project’s transition to a fully community-driven ecosystem, laying the groundwork for a token generation event (TGE) scheduled for the first quarter of 2025. The phased approach aims to hand over decision-making power, gradually reducing Consensys’s oversight.

Nicolas Liochon, Linea’s founder, described the decentralization journey as a comprehensive process, incorporating technical and organizational changes. Key to this transition is the introduction of diverse contributors like Status, the team behind the Nimbus client, which already manages 10% of Ethereum’s Proof-of-Stake network.

According to Liochon, decentralizing Linea’s sequencer and fostering an open environment for proposals and feedback will be crucial as they approach the TGE milestone. He emphasized that sequencer decentralization marks the first step toward transforming Linea into a censorship-resistant network.

To facilitate this shift, the Linea Association will assume temporary governance responsibilities. However, Consensys remains closely involved, ensuring seamless integration with its cornerstone products, MetaMask and Infura.

Joe Lubin, Consensys’s CEO, highlighted the strategic role of MetaMask in onboarding users, leveraging features like MetaMask Card payments and identity solutions through attestation registries such as Verax. Lubin pointed to MetaMask’s Embedded Wallet, Portfolio, Push Notifications, and dApp discovery tools as critical elements to strengthen Linea’s ecosystem.

Linea’s decentralization push follows a challenging period. A security incident in June involving Velocore, a decentralized exchange running on Linea, resulted in a $2.6 million exploit. The event triggered widespread scrutiny over the network’s readiness for decentralization.

Linea’s swift action to halt its sequencer mitigated further damage, but the breach underscored the importance of achieving a resilient, decentralized infrastructure. The team assured its community on X that once decentralization is complete, Linea will eliminate the ability to censor transactions or pause block production, aligning with its goal of fostering a censorship-resistant environment.
